Communicating With Artificial Intelligence
The “Artificial Intelligence Literacy” seminar, organized by the Mersin University (MEÜ) Project Development Community, was held on March 9, 2026, at the Prof. Dr. Uğur Oral Culture Center. At the event, Dr. Taner Sezer, a lecturer from the MEÜ Technology Transfer Office (TTO), gave a comprehensive presentation titled “Understanding Artificial Intelligence.”
In his presentation, Dr. Sezer analyzed the current state of Turkey's artificial intelligence ecosystem and its future development areas, drawing attention to the OECD AI Index 2026 data. Stating that Turkey is categorized as a “developing country” in terms of its artificial intelligence infrastructure and ecosystem, Sezer emphasized that the increase in the number of graduates, particularly in information and computer engineering departments, is significant for the country's human resource potential.
“We must subject artificial intelligence technologies to a critical and ethical filter.”
Dr. Sezer stated that artificial intelligence literacy is not just about using these technologies. Taner Sezer stated: “We shouldn't just be content with using artificial intelligence technologies; we must subject these systems to a critical and ethical filter. Lack of information encountered in application processes, the expectation of very quick results, and the wrong choice of tools can sometimes create difficulties.”
In his presentation, Lecturer Dr. Sezer provided information about the basic working principles of language models (LLM), explaining that these models generate language by learning patterns in large datasets; in other words, they model probability distributions within data, not the world itself. Lecturer Dr. Sezer added, “Understanding the working logic of artificial intelligence will help us use these systems more consciously and effectively.”
Lecturer Dr. Sezer also emphasized the importance of adopting a balanced approach in the face of rapid developments in the field of artificial intelligence. He highlighted the value of long-term studies alongside the opportunities offered by technology. Sezer emphasized that fundamental steps such as data collection, data processing, and identifying the right problem areas are crucial for sustainable projects.
