Students From Menteş Martyr Osman Köse Secondary School Visited The Faculty Of Education! (18.04.2025)
Within the scope of the “School-Faculty of Education Collaboration” event, a collaboration between Mersin University Faculty of Education and Menteş Şehit Osman Köse Secondary School, 5th-grade secondary school students had the opportunity to explore mathematics and science through hands-on activities in a university setting. The event was conducted by the Department of Mathematics and Science Education of the Faculty of Education.
The event was carried out under the joint academic responsibility of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nejla Gürefe, Research Assistant Fatma Karaismailoğlu, and Research Assistant Havva Solak. In the activities held in the Mathematics Laboratory, students learned by experiencing the relationship between mathematics and daily life through teaching materials such as geometry models, fraction rods, and number lines. Interactive games and applications supported students' mathematical thinking skills in the activities, which also involved the active participation of prospective teachers.
In the science activities, experimental studies on heat and temperature were conducted in the Physics Laboratory. Students developed their scientific process skills by using thermometers and observing the heat conduction properties of different materials. During the experiments, prospective teachers guided the students, supporting their inquiry, observation, and inference processes.
This event, a strong example of university-school collaboration, enhanced students' scientific curiosity and sense of discovery while providing prospective teachers with experience in application-based teaching in real learning environments. In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of "Quality Education," the event aimed to foster scientific awareness at an early age and support lifelong learning.
The goal is to continue these types of multi-stakeholder and shared-responsibility collaborations, which bring together theory and practice in education, in a sustainable manner.
