DEPARTMENT OF TURKISH AND SOCIAL SCIENCES EDUCATION

 

1-General Information

 

In 2001, the Department started to enroll students in the Turkish Language Teaching Undergraduate Program and in 2021 in the Social Studies Teaching Department. As of the 2022-2023 academic year, the department has a total of 327 undergraduate students enrolled in the undergraduate program and 104 students enrolled in graduate programs. There are 15 academic staff and 10 classrooms, 1 Seminar Room, 1 Drama Classroom and 15 offices are used in our trainings.

3- Facilities Provided to Students

In the Department courses defined in the curriculum, methods and techniques within the framework of student-centered teaching approaches are used. Students are guided in participating in scientific research projects and are provided with the opportunity to experience scientific activities (such as congresses, information festivals) and practical vocational training through oral or poster presentations of research results.

The aim of the department is: To serve humanity with education-training, research and development and applications at national and international standards by using up-to-date knowledge and technology in the light of universal values; to educate competent, innovative, entrepreneurial individuals who respect basic human values.

To be a respected department that continues to train social studies and Turkish educators with the high-level competencies needed in the fields of social sciences and Turkish education, carries out original projects, research and lifelong education activities, and has both national and international recognition.

 

Goals of the department:

 

- To create educational environments and tools and equipment in accordance with national and international standards and pedagogical requirements.

 

- To increase the quality and quantity of services for students,

 

- To establish environments that will enable the development of students.

- Increasing the motivation and productivity of internal stakeholders.

 

- Increasing university promotions for secondary education institutions and students,

 

- Organizing activities to raise awareness of social responsibility.

 

- To carry out scientific, aesthetic and cultural activities.

Our department, which has the Department of Turkish Education and the Department of Social Studies Education, has 2 undergraduate and 3 graduate programs and 1 PhD program. These programs are as follows:

The Department of Turkish Education started its educational activities within the Department of Turkish Education with 30 students enrolled in the Turkish Language Teaching Undergraduate Program in the 2001-2002 academic year. The Department of Social Studies Education was established in 2012 under the Department of Primary Education. In 2016, with the decision of the Council of Higher Education, both departments were brought together under the name of Turkish and Social Sciences Education Department.

 

According to the data of 2023, a total of 431 students are enrolled in the Department of Turkish Education in undergraduate programs, 35 in the Turkish Education Master's Program, 21 in the Turkish Teaching as a Foreign Language Master's Program, and 5 in the Turkish Education Doctoral Program. In the Department of Social Studies Education, 43 students are enrolled in the Social Studies Education Master's Program.

There are 15 academic staff in our department, 7 of whom are professors, 6 associate professors, 1 lecturer and 1 research assistant.

 

The mission of Mersin University Department of Turkish and Social Sciences Education is to serve humanity with education, research, development and applications at national and international standards by using up-to-date knowledge and technology in the light of universal values; to educate competent, innovative, entrepreneurial individuals who respect basic human values.

 

The vision of the department is to be a leading and internationally recognized department that continues to train Turkish and Social Studies teachers and academicians with the high-level competencies needed in the field; to carry out original projects, research and lifelong education activities related to children, youth and families.
