Fakültemizden “deniz Çayırlarının Son Kalesi: Aydıncık” Paneline Katılım
As the Faculty of Fisheries, the panel titled "The Last Stronghold of Seagrass Meadows: Aydıncık," organized in collaboration with Mersin City Council and METU Institute of Marine Sciences, attracted great interest with the participation of scientists and nature conservation experts. The panel, held at Mersin Maritime Chamber of Commerce Meeting Hall, aimed to raise awareness about the protection of marine ecosystems. A total of 50 people attended the event.

The Importance of Seagrass Meadows and the Threats They Face
During the panel, Prof. Dr. Deniz Ayas from our Faculty and Dr. Evrim Kalkan Tezcan from METU Institute of Marine Sciences shared important information about the ecological significance of Posidonia oceanica seagrass species endemic to the Mediterranean, the threats they face, and conservation strategies.
The carbon sequestration capacity of seagrass meadows, their critical role in protecting coastal ecosystems, and their contribution to biodiversity were among the prominent topics discussed at the panel. It was emphasized that these ecosystems, which spread over large areas along the Aydıncık coast, provide vital habitats for marine organisms and improve water quality.
However, it was stated that factors such as port and marina construction, unconscious anchoring activities, and climate change threaten seagrass meadows. Panelists underlined the need for urgent measures to protect coastal habitats.

Conservation and Restoration Recommendations
The following recommendations for the protection of seagrass meadows were discussed at the panel:
- Expansion of Marine Protected Areas,
- Strengthening of ecological impact assessment processes,
- Increasing public awareness,
- Educating local fishermen and coastal communities,
- Promoting sustainable tourism and fishing practices.
The event concluded with an interactive session where participants' questions were answered. Scientists and nature conservation experts emphasized the need for more effective regional and national policies for the protection of seagrass meadows.
As the Faculty of Fisheries, we announce to the public that we will continue our awareness-raising activities for the protection of seagrass meadows and our scientific research in this field.
