Department of Electronics and Automation

HISTORY

The Department of Electronics and Automation at Mersin University's Vocational School of Technical Sciences, with its deep-rooted history, is a significant academic unit that trains qualified technical personnel in the field of electronics. The department offers programs in Electronic Communication Technology, Electronic Technology, Control and Automation Technology, and Digital Conversion Electronics.

The Electronic Communication Technology and Electronic Technology programs were established in 1987. In 1992, they were included in the YÖK-World Bank Second Industrial Education Project, providing a modern infrastructure with three fully equipped laboratories. During this period, faculty members received training abroad in their fields, strengthening the foundations of applied education. A second-day program was launched in the 1997-1998 academic year, but was discontinued in 2018 in accordance with a decision by the Council of Higher Education. Today, both programs continue to operate only as formal education.

The Control and Automation Technology Program was established in 1992 under the same project; After completing the laboratory infrastructure, the program began accepting students in the 1994-1995 academic year. In 2000, following a curriculum revision implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of National Education (MEB) and the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), the program's name was changed to "Industrial Automation." Since 2010, it has continued its education as the "Control and Automation Technology Program" under the umbrella of the Department of Electronics and Automation. A second-day program was launched in the 1997-1998 academic year, but was discontinued in 2018 in accordance with a decision by the Council of Higher Education. Currently, the program continues its activities only as a formal education program.

The department's newest program, Digital Transformation Electronics, was opened in 2025 by a decision of the Council of Higher Education. This program, which will accept its first students in the 2025-2026 academic year, aims to provide innovative and well-equipped graduates for the sector by focusing on the transformation of electronic technologies in our age of accelerating digitalization. The program stands out with its industrial collaborations and applied curriculum that complies with international standards. Today, the Department of Electronics and Automation, with its accumulated knowledge, strong laboratory infrastructure, and experienced academic staff, continues to provide education and training in the fields of electronics, communications, and automation, and continues to train qualified technical personnel at the regional and national levels.
