Establishment Information

    The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology Program, housed within Mersin University Technical Sciences Vocational School, was established in 1992 within the framework of the YOK-World Bank II. Industrial Education Project. It began formal (first track) education by admitting students in the 1994-1995 academic year. The Formal and Second Track programs were carried out concurrently with the opening of the Second Track in the 1998-1999 academic year. Currently, only the Formal Education track is being conducted. Since 2010, the program has continued its educational activities as an affiliate of the Department of Electrical and Energy.

Rules on Recognition of Prior Learning

    Exemption exams for the compulsory Foreign Language courses in the curriculum are held at the beginning of each semester. Students who succeed in the exam are exempted from the corresponding course in the curriculum. Furthermore, newly registered students may be exempted from courses they have previously taken and passed in any Higher Education program, provided they meet the conditions specified in Article 14 of the Mersin University Associate and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations.

Qualification Conditions and Rules

    The conditions that students must meet to obtain an associate degree in the field of Electrical and Energy are: a) Successfully completing all courses in the curriculum (equivalent to a total of 120 ECTS), b) Achieving a weighted average of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, c) Completing the compulsory 20-day internship.

Program Profile

    This program aims to train technicians responsible for the establishment, operation, and maintenance of air conditioning, ventilation, and refrigeration systems in homes, workplaces, and industrial facilities. These technicians are intended to fill the need for intermediate staff who possess both sufficient technical knowledge and practical skills, positioned between Mechanical Engineers and qualified workers/craftsmen. Furthermore, in some small and medium-sized enterprises, these technicians can become the senior technical staff of the firm and, consequently, assume leadership and managerial roles. On the other hand, students who complete this program can continue their education in undergraduate departments upon succeeding in the centralized vertical transfer exam. The duration of the program is two years.

    Graduates of the Department of Electrical and Energy are employed in many fields related to their profession in the public and private sectors, and they can also establish their own businesses.

Progression to Higher Degree Programs

    Candidates who successfully complete the associate degree can pursue studies in related undergraduate programs at universities, provided they obtain sufficient scores in the vertical transfer examination.

Exams, Measurement, and Evaluation

    Students are subject to a midterm exam, in-semester work (project, seminar, short exam, assignment, or a second midterm exam), and a final exam for each course. The contribution of the midterm exam to the success grade is 40%, and the contribution of the final exam is 60%. All exams are evaluated over 100 points, and there is a minimum requirement of scoring at least 50 points on the final exam. Students can take a make-up exam for the courses they failed at the end of each semester. Students who receive one of the letter grades (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB), or (CC) are considered to have passed the course.

Graduation Requirements

    A diploma is awarded to students who successfully complete all courses available in the program (equivalent to a total of 120 ECTS), achieve a minimum weighted grade point average of 2.0 out of 4.00, and complete their 20 work-day vocational internship.

    Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Laboratory and Computer Laboratory facilities, established within the scope of the YÖK-World Bank Project, are available.
