Department of Chemistry and Chemical Processing Technology

Our department was established in 1976 as the Petro-Chemical Vocational School under the YAYKUR project, affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. In 1978, this department was closed, and the Chemistry program continued under the Mersin Vocational School. In 1982, it was affiliated with Çukurova University. In 1988, Mersin Vocational School was included in the scope of the YÖK/World Bank Industrial Education Project, and education continued under the Technical Programs as the Chemistry Program. In 2006, the Economic and Administrative Programs were separated from Mersin Vocational School and divided into two separate schools: theVocational School of Social Sciences and the Vocational School of Technical Sciences. Currently, our department continues its education as the Chemistry Technology program under the Chemistry and Chemical Processing Technology Department within MEU Technical Sciences Vocational School. The program's goal is to meet the need for qualified chemistry technicians in the field of chemistry technology.

The Chemistry Technology Program is a two-year program consisting of 4 semesters, each lasting 14 weeks, and includes a 20-day internship. During this two-year period, the program provides theoretical courses, laboratory practices, and industry-based education. Graduates of this program are entitled to the title of 'Chemistry Technician.' The program aims to teach students the fundamental concepts of chemical science and industrial chemistry while developing their manual skills in industrial and laboratory applications. The goal is to train contemporary technicians who have the knowledge and skills to serve in the field of chemistry technology, who are creative and critical thinkers, sensitive to ethical values, and who adopt lifelong learning as a way of life.

Graduates of the Chemistry Technology Program who succeed in the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS) conducted by ÖSYM can transfer to the undergraduate programs of Engineering and Science Faculties. Graduates can vertically transfer to the Chemistry, Process, Polymer, and Environmental Engineering departments of Engineering Faculties as well as the Chemistry departments of Science Faculties.

Main Fields of Work and Employment Opportunities:Graduates of the Chemistry Technology Program are employed as Chemistry Technicians in public institutions, the private sector, and various areas of the chemical industry. Some of the fields of work include petrochemicals and refineries, plastics, glass, cement, textiles, paint, detergents, cosmetics, paper, metallurgy and materials, mechanical chemistry, forensic science, research laboratories, environmental, water and wastewater laboratories, petroleum and petroleum products analysis laboratories, and other chemistry-related fields.
