Department of Chemistry

Welcome!
Chemistry is a vital discipline within the fundamental sciences, offering applied solutions across various fields such as industry, medicine, environmental science, and materials science. The science of chemistry plays a significant role in discovering new materials, drug development, energy production, product development, and the search for solutions to environmental problems. Moreover, chemistry frequently interacts with other scientific disciplines like biology, physics, and mathematics, contributing to a broader scientific understanding.
About Us
The Department of Chemistry at Mersin University was established in 1992 and began offering educational programs in the 1997-1998 academic year. Over the years, our department has developed well-equipped research laboratories for infrastructure and educational resources. We graduated our first students in the 2000-2001 academic year. In addition to the 4-year undergraduate program, we offer master's and doctoral programs. Our master's program began in the 1996-1997 academic year, and the doctoral program started in the 2003-2004 academic year. The Department of Chemistry comprises five divisions: Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Biochemistry.
The undergraduate program in Chemistry provides education in fundamental chemical principles and applications, aiming to equip students with scientific thinking and research skills. For students who wish to specialize in chemistry and pursue an academic career, our Master's and Doctoral Programs offer advanced laboratory work and thesis projects.
We aim to teach our students the science of chemistry while also fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and collective thinking skills. Additionally, the ERASMUS program provides opportunities for our students to study at universities abroad, enhancing their knowledge, skills, and experiences.
Vision
To provide a research-focused and student-centred educational environment, to become a department recognized and respected at both national and international levels, to represent our university effectively on global platforms, and to contribute to the development of our university through scientific and technological R&D activities.
Mission
To make significant contributions to chemistry education, research, and applications, and to train chemists at undergraduate and postgraduate levels who can think critically, scientifically, and multidimensionally, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and apply their extensive knowledge to daily life while being participatory, sharing, respectful of social values, and professionally competent.
Employment Opportunities for Chemists
Graduates of our four-year undergraduate program receive the title of "Chemist." Given the wide range of applications in the field of chemistry, employment opportunities for chemists are also broad. Potential sectors include:
Pharmaceutical Industry: Development, production, quality control, and research & development processes of drugs.
Environment and Energy: Environmental pollution control, waste management, energy production, and storage processes.
Cosmetics Industry: Formulation and quality control processes of new cosmetic products.
Food Industry: Development of new products and production control processes.
Private Laboratories: Conducting analyses and tests, determining the components and properties of various materials.
Industrial Chemistry: Industrial processes related to the production, processing, and use of chemical substances.
Materials Science: Design, synthesis, and characterization of new materials used in electronics, nanotechnology, and polymer sectors.
Additionally, our graduates can obtain pedagogical training to become teachers at the high school level or work as instructors at universities and research institutes.
