History
Mersin University Faculty of Pharmacy was established by the Council of Ministers' decision numbered 2000/854 dated June 2, 2000, according to the additional 30th article of the Law No. 2809 published in the Official Gazette dated July 13, 2000. The appointment of the Dean took place on August 2, 2000. The faculty began admitting students in the 2001-2002 academic year.
Until the 2005-2006 academic year, a 4-year program was implemented. As a result of the faculty’s efforts to harmonize with European Union member countries, and in line with the decision of the Deans of Pharmacy Faculties in Turkey to standardize education and training, the "Core Curriculum Program for Pharmacy Faculties" was adopted. Consequently, our program was restructured, and from the 2005-2006 academic year onwards, a 5-year undergraduate program has been implemented at our faculty.
Our faculty is located in Blocks B and C of the Mersin University Yenişehir Campus. In Block C, there are 3 classrooms with 70 seats each, 1 classroom with 176 seats, 1 classroom with 144 seats, 9 student laboratories, and 8 research laboratories. In Block B, there is 1 classroom with 160 seats and 1 classroom with 152 seats, where educational activities are carried out.
Our faculty includes three academic departments and their associated divisions: the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (with the divisions of Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and Pharmaceutical Toxicology), the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology (with the divisions of Pharmaceutical Technology and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology), and the Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences (with the divisions of Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Pharmaceutical Microbiology). Undergraduate and graduate education and training in these divisions are conducted by a total of 35 academic staff, including 13 Professors, 9 Associate Professors, 5 Assistant Professors, and 8 Research Assistants. The Mersin University Faculty of Pharmacy admits students based on the MF-3 score type, and in the 2023-2024 academic year, 608 students are continuing their education.
The faculty offers 7 master’s programs and 5 doctoral programs administered by its divisions. Additionally, faculty members are involved in various roles, including teaching in the Faculty of Dentistry’s undergraduate program, as well as in the Medical Services and Techniques, Chemistry, and Chemical Processing Technologies associate degree programs at MEU Health School and MEU Mersin Vocational School Distance Education Unit. They also hold positions such as Department Head of Pharmaceutical Programs, Director and Deputy Director of the Advanced Technology Training, Research, and Application Center (MEİTAM), membership in the MEU Animal Experiments Local Ethics Committee, membership in the Turkish Language Association Drug and Pharmacy Terminology Working Group, and membership in the Scientific Advisory Board of the Ministry of Health’s Directorate General of Pharmaceuticals and Pharmacy Biotechnology Advisory Commission. Furthermore, since January 25, 2019, our faculty has been accredited by the National Pharmacy Education Accreditation Board (ECZAK) for a period of 6 years.
During the 5-year educational period, our faculty's students take both mandatory and elective courses where they learn about drug and raw material synthesis, as well as their quantitative and qualitative analyses, quality control, and standardization. They graduate with a foundation in pharmaceutical care and clinical pharmacy, and they also educate patients on rational drug use. In addition, our faculty trains graduate-ready, scientifically knowledgeable pharmacists who are capable of producing and utilizing scientific knowledge, adhering to professional and ethical standards, and being creative, research-oriented, and principled. The elective courses and graduation research projects provided by our faculty prepare Pharmacy graduates to be principled and effective in professional matters and interdisciplinary studies. Pharmacy graduates are employed in various roles within the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, including production units, business development, pharmacovigilance departments, regulatory affairs, research and development areas, quality control laboratories, and as responsible managers and executives. Our graduates find job opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry, the Turkish Medical Devices and Pharmaceuticals Agency, private, public, and university hospitals, and as community pharmacists. Additionally, those who successfully complete their graduate studies may pursue academic careers in Pharmacy faculties. Special emphasis is placed on international collaborations in education and research, alongside student and faculty exchange agreements under Erasmus+ and Farabi Student Exchange Programs.
