Department of Toxicology

Genel Görünüm

Toxicology is the science that investigate the adverse effects of chemicals on living organisms (negative, adverse), and that has existed since ancient times, developing and predictive property. It is a multidisciplinary science that determine in living beings that are exposed to physical, chemical and biological agents (substances), the toxic effects that may occur after exposure and which mechanisms of the toxic effects occur (toxic mechanisms) and how to protect against the toxic effects occurring (antidotes), the credibility ranges for chemicals. Toxicology has subdivisions such as clinical toxicology, environmental toxicology, molecular toxicology, analytical toxicology and occupational toxicology.

Depending on the rapid development of industry and technology, people are exposed to many toxic substances in both daily life and workplaces. Nowadays, there are approximately 70 thousand chemicals, including majority synthetic chemicals and new chemical substances enter the human life every year. Thus, the importance of toxicology as a science which determines the threshold limits for chemicals is increasing day by day.

Our department has two laboratory for research and education purposes. At the our department, it is done studies on genetic polymorphisms, molecular toxicology, analytical toxicology, forensic toxicology, genetic toxicology, environmental toxicology. Our graduate program is carried on by collaboration with Gazi University and Mersin University.
