ENGLISH LINGUISTICS
Program Learning Objectives (PLOs)
PLO1. To educate students who are capable of analyzing the linguistic structures of natural languages, primarily Turkish and English, synchronically and diachronically within the framework of all subfields of linguistics.
PLO2. To educate students who can apply their linguistic knowledge in interdisciplinary fields and demonstrate original and critical approaches in language teaching environments.
PLO3. To educate individuals who are highly academically motivated, follow developments in the field, can critically evaluate the knowledge they acquire, and can effectively use information technology tools to generate knowledge; who can use English correctly and fluently and, using scientific methods in this language, can produce original work in the field of linguistics, thereby contributing to linguistics both in the Turkish and universal contexts.
Program Learning Outcomes (POs)
With the successful completion of this program, students will be able to
PO1. Analyze language as a system and explain, from a structuralist perspective, the levels of linguistic structure and the differences between human language and other communication systems.
PO2. Examine world languages, their social usage, translation processes, and language change through comparative analysis using different theories.
PO3. Analyze corpus data, fieldwork findings, academic texts, media and advertising discourse using linguistic criteria.
PO4. Examine and analyze linguistic units across phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic, and philosophical dimensions.
PO5. Examine linguistic structures and processes holistically through discourse, meaning, cognition, culture, history, universals, acquisition, neurological foundations, and computational approaches.
PO6. Apply language teaching methods effectively by using linguistic knowledge and authentic language data in interdisciplinary fields and with contemporary technologies.
PO7. Evaluate professional responsibility in accordance with scientific and ethical principles, their knowledge of linguistics and language applications, and their general culture within a lifelong learning framework.
PO8. Apply linguistic knowledge in collaboration with related disciplines through project-based work in individual or team-based social responsibility contexts.
PO9. Identify and analyze research problems within and outside the field by employing scientific and academic research methods.
PO10. Present and disseminate scholarly work in linguistics, Turkish linguistics, and language applications orally and in writing in Turkish and English, in accordance with academic conventions.
PO11. Uses advanced information and communication technologies with B1-level proficiency in Turkish and a foreign language.
PO12. Develops awareness of social justice, quality, environmental responsibility, and occupational health and safety in line with Atatürk’s principles and reforms.
