Program Introduction

The Department of Archaeology was established in 1992, recognizing the archaeological importance of the eastern Mediterranean region. After establishing the academic and technical infrastructure, the Department began accepting students in 1998. It has been offering Master's degrees since 2002 and Doctoral degrees since 2006.

The Department of Archaeology has three professors, two associate professors, one assistant professor, and one lecturer. Department members are selected based on their areas of expertise and begin their duties. In addition to the core courses required for archaeology, department members who share their expertise at the undergraduate and graduate levels enrich the program. The fact that the Department offers both Latin and Ancient Greek courses contributes to its international character. Within the scope of Classical Archaeology, our curriculum examines architecture, sculpture, ceramics, and other small artifacts from Greek and Roman civilizations in detail, ensuring that this data is considered within the context of the historical, political, social development, and philosophy of the period. Our curriculum also examines both earlier (Protohistory) and later (Early Christian and Byzantine) periods. Furthermore, the archaeology of the region (Cilicia), which has been little studied, began to appear in international scientific literature after our Department was established. Courses, field trips, and international symposiums on the region enable our Department to train students in this field and to transfer knowledge at an international level. Within this framework, the Cilicia Archaeology Research Center (KAAM) was established to conduct research on the region's archaeology. Our Department also conducts archaeological excavations, which provide our students with practical training.
