About Us
Mersin University's Faculty of Aquatic Products was established in 1992 by Law No. 3837, began its academic activities in the 1995–1996 academic year, and has been operating at the Yenişehir campus since the 2000–2001 academic year. Within its academic structure, the Faculty of Aquatic Products consists of four departments: Aquatic Basic Sciences, Aquatic Aquaculture, Aquatic Catching and Processing Technology, and Aquatic Engineering. However, undergraduate education is conducted in a single program called "Aquatic Engineering." The program is four years long, and the language of instruction is Turkish. Students who successfully complete the program graduate with the title of "Aquatic Engineer." Our graduates are employed in aquatic product farming enterprises and processing facilities in institutions affiliated with the Ministries of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment, and Urbanization. It is represented as the "Aquatic Products Department" within the MEU Institute of Science and Technology, and offers postgraduate education.

Our Vision
Aquaculture is of great importance for a healthy human diet. In many countries, people largely meet their animal protein needs through the consumption of aquaculture products. However, overfishing, water pollution, and urbanization threaten aquatic life. Indeed, while global aquaculture production remains stable, the world population is growing, and the demand for aquaculture products is constantly rising. This general picture also applies to our country and our region.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has stated that this supply–demand gap can only be addressed through "sustainable" aquaculture and fisheries. In the context of aquaculture, the "ecosystem approach" and environmentally friendly, economically sustainable, and socially acceptable development are goals that must be targeted. In the fishing industry, the conservation and sustainable use of aquatic resources have become fundamental principles of fisheries management. Increasing the added value created by the fishing industry, providing healthy products to consumers, and, from a food safety perspective, seafood processing technology are also important tools for a sustainable sector. The key to achieving sustainable fishing is undoubtedly fundamental research on aquatic resources. Sustainable development is impossible without fundamental inland water and marine sciences and research.
Our faculty's fundamental vision is to conduct fundamental research necessary for the conservation and sustainable use of our region's aquatic resources; to fulfill its duty and responsibility for building a knowledge society; to become a center of attraction for aquaculture research and education in the Mediterranean Region; to meet the sector's knowledge and research needs, particularly among fishermen and businesses; to contribute to the alignment of our region's aquaculture sector with the Common Fisheries Policies during the European Union accession process; and to train aquaculture engineers equipped with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to be employed both domestically and internationally.
