Department of Geomatics Engineering

Vision

The vision of the Geomatics Engineering Department at Mersin University is to raise forward-looking individuals with broad perspectives and in communication with all national and international stakeholders in their network that progresses rapidly with technology. In this context, it is aimed to keep the lecture plans and curricula updated and to teach the most modern technological tools. These people are encouraged to pioneer the production of these modern measurement technologies rather than only using them. Adding such values to the graduates of the Geomatics Engineering Department at Mersin University is the main vision.

Mission

There are educational and professional goals for raising the candidates of Geomatics Engineering. The educational ones:

•         To enable them to freely improve their skills in information and technology

•         To have discipline, organization, and ethical codes brought by engineering

•         To aim to increase the social welfare by considering the benefits/costs during the projects

•         To prioritize the environmental and social needs while dealing with problems in a solution-oriented manner

•         To have the ability to solve the problems

•         To use national and scientific resources beneficially

•         Not to compromise on justice, trust, and sensitivity

•         To have a spirit of working together (teamwork)

•         To be raised as individuals with high self-confidence in knowledge

•         To gain leadership qualification by taking responsibility

•         To desire lifelong learning and to love their profession.

The professional ones are related to succeeding the applications of Geomatics Engineering:

•         Terrestrial surveying in a national and international context

•         Geodetic surveying

•         Interpretation of photogrammetric and remotely sensed images

•         Production of maps at small or large scales

•         Land management, development, and real estate valuation.

History

Department of Geomatics Engineering at Engineering Faculty of Mersin University was founded on 30th June 2016 with the confirmation of the Turkish Council of Higher Education. Prof. Dr. Murat YAKAR was appointed ad the founder head of the department. In the line with the decision taken by the Turkish Council of Higher Education on 7th March 2019, the Department of Geomatics Engineering at Mersin University started to admit students with 20 student contingent, and the bachelor programme was included in the guide of University Entrance Test in 2019.

Title Awarded

Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a bachelor degree in the field of Geomatics Engineering and receive the title of Geomatics Engineer.

Employment Opportunities

The graduates of Geomatics Engineering can create horizontal and vertical control networks that form a basis for their professional activities, measure and evaluate the deformation for monitoring the Earth’s movements and engineering structures, implement the projects of highway, railway, bridge, dam, subway, and tunnels, use satellites (GPS) to define the position, collect and process data with the help of vehicle tracking systems, aerial photographs, and satellite images, prepare plans for restoration activities with the help of terrestrial images, produce digital and printed topographic maps at large, medium and small scale for various purposes, visualize spatial and various multimedia data for internet-based map presentation, create spatial databases and geographical information systems, practice urban and rural land arrangements, legal studies, cadastral works, expropriation, real estate valuation and land use planning. They can work in public institutions as wells as the private sector. Some examples of these public institutions are the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and its provincial directorates, General Directorate of Maps, General Directorate of Land Registry and Cadastre, State Hydraulic Works, Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, General Directorate of Highways, Directorate of Disaster and Emergency, Pipelines and Petroleum Transport Co. (BOTAÅž), Housing Development Administration (TOKI), Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA), General Directorate of Forestry and municipalities. Some examples from the private sector are the companies and engineering-contracting offices operating in the fields of mapping, construction, land consolidation, real estate valuation, real estate investment trusts, real estate portfolio management, etc. They also have a right to start their own business.

Laboratories

The Department of Geomatics Engineering offers a professional, educational, and intellectual experience. The department, which was established in 2015, admitted the first students in the 2019-2020 academic year. There are four faculty members and two research assistants in the program. The department has an instrument laboratory where terrestrial and aerial measurement tools are kept and Computer Laboratory enables the continuous training for projects and fieldwork with its capacity of 20 students. The projects can be carried out in the laboratories in the field of photogrammetry, cartography, remote sensing, aerial and terrestrial images. Maps can be produced and printed out with the help of a map plotter. In addition to technical laboratories, the students are able to carry out fieldwork across Çiftlikköy Campus.
