Introduction of the Department
The Department of Mathematics Education was established in 1999 under the Department of Primary Education at Mersin University's Faculty of Education. The Mathematics Education Program began education in the 2005-2006 academic year and produced its first graduates in 2009. In accordance with the decision of the Higher Education Executive Board dated June 15, 2016, during the restructuring of the Education Faculties, the Department of Mathematics Education was incorporated into the Department of Mathematics and Science Education.
The Mathematics Teaching and Science Teaching undergraduate programs were updated by the Council of Higher Education in 2018, and the courses were grouped into three groups: Field Education Courses (AE) 45-50%, Teaching Profession Knowledge Courses (MB) 30-35%, and General Knowledge Courses (GK) 15-20%. According to the decision taken at the General Assembly of Higher Education meeting dated August 10, 2020, the determination of courses, curricula, and credits within programs, taking into account course category groups, was left to the relevant boards of higher education institutions. In this regard, to meet the needs of the age, improve the quality of education, and train more qualified teachers, the Primary School Mathematics Teaching and Science Teaching programs were updated in 2022. In 2024, updates were made to the elective course ratios, and the final program, which included new courses, was approved by the university senate.
