Accreditation
Accreditation is an evaluation and external quality assurance process conducted to determine whether a higher education program or higher education institution meets predefined academic and field-specific standards established by the Council of Higher Education. It may take two forms: institutional accreditation and departmental/program accreditation. Institutional accreditation is granted by the Higher Education Quality Council of Türkiye (THEQC), while program accreditation for our department is granted by THEQC and STAR.
The Institutional Accreditation Program (IAP) is an external evaluation method that assesses the quality assurance, education and training, research and development, community engagement, and governance system processes in higher education institutions within the “plan, implement, check, and take action” cycle.
The IAP is carried out by evaluation teams formed by the Higher Education Quality Council of Türkiye, in accordance with the Institutional External Evaluation and Accreditation Criteria and the Institutional External Evaluation and Accreditation Guide.
Each year, the higher education institutions to be included in the IAP are determined by THEQC, and evaluation teams are formed in accordance with the structures of these institutions. Two visits (a preliminary visit and a site visit) are conducted at the respective institutions by these evaluation teams.
Based on these visits, Institutional Accreditation Reports (IAR) are prepared by the evaluation teams, and accreditation decisions are made by THEQC considering these reports.
The following decisions are issued by THEQC within the scope of the IAP:
-
Full Accreditation (for five years)
-
Conditional Accreditation (for two years)
-
Denial of Accreditation
Program Accreditation refers to the evaluation and external quality assurance process conducted to determine whether a higher education program meets predefined academic and field-specific standards set by an accreditation agency.
In Türkiye, the Higher Education Quality Council is responsible for authorizing and recognizing accreditation agencies. The authorization of national accreditation agencies and the recognition of international accreditation agencies are carried out according to the principles and criteria set by THEQC.
Since 2016, the Higher Education Programs and Quotas Guide (formerly ÖSYS Higher Education Programs and Quotas Guide) has included information on programs accredited by accreditation agencies authorized or recognized by THEQC within the YKS system.
